In a 1962 AP story, Burgess remembers his favorite book from childhood. It was not
Aim! Fire! Bang! Stories, as stated in his autobiography. Rather it was one in a series of natural history readers for children:
Friends in feathers and fur (1885) by
James Johonnot.
Much of Burgess's vocabulary, pedagogical perspective, even character names (Longlegs the Heron) can be found here.
